After Augustiner had installed its second filling and packaging line from Krones in early 2011 the brewery wanted a holistically conceived IT system one that images plausibility-checks and visualises the entire gamut of filling and packaging technology installed. “Single-sourcing throughout” was the watchword for implementing an IT package that optimises and integrates all third-party machines the older filling and packaging kit plus the IT structures already in place. The client’s paramount stipulation was to ensure complete-coverage batch tracking while at the same time upgrading the level of product safety.
The major tools involved are the Line Management System (LMS) and the Line Documentation System (LDS). First of all the orders are entered in the LMS which utilises these data to control all the filling and packaging machines integrated into the line and tracks the bright-beer-tank sequences all the way through to the third-party machines such as the coding/dating devices and the pallet labeller. All the relevant parameters are displayed in easy-read formats on the operator control panels of the machines concerned and additional information like current production quantities data on residual oxygen and original gravity but ongoing malfunctions and messages can also be followed in the large-text display. This means type and article mix-ups are well-nigh precluded with dress and product designations being holistically monitored all the way through to the pallet information.
Krones’ solution provided extensive interfacing for successfully integrating the client’s own higher-order IT system so as to assure reliable reporting. Since the lines continued in production mode during implementation the challenges involved were particularly tough – short time windows the need for tightly responsive coordination and both before and during installation of course intensive and continuous consultancy. The experts from the TUM at Weihenstephan signed and sealed the project’s completion by confirming successful validation. The result is highly impressive.
